Boys tennis | Piedmont season comes to an end

Highlanders fall at Marin Academy

The Piedmont High School boys tennis team wrapped up its season with a 5-2 loss at Marin Academy on May 13 in the first round of the North Coast Section Division 2 team tournament.

Highlanders sophomore Lucas Smolko, coming off of his second place finish at the NCS Division 2 individual tournament, defeated Will Young by default in the No. 1 singles match. The score was 5-5 in the first set when Young conceded.

The Wildcats won the rest of the singles matches. Rex Rutchik beat Nick Welch at No. 2, 6-0, 6-4. Jackson Faber defeated Nick King at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2. Jack Withers downed Emilio Misra at No. 4, 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles, Piedmont’s Willie Tenney and Gianluca Bini took the No. 1 match over Luke Aspatore and Amrik Chattha in a terrific match, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 10-8. In another good match, Marin Academy’s Sebastian Lema and Tyler Hakman beat Luca LaForte and Kasper Jansson at No. 2, 6-7 (3), 7-5, 10-8. Leo Fawson and Ilan Goldschmidt downed Ben Davis and Joey Assalian at No. 3, 7-5, 7-5.

Branson ended up winning the title.

The Highlanders finished the season 10-9-1.
