Baseball loses to Encinal, 6-0
Encinal High School’s Kyle Cook threw a no-hitter to lead the Jets to a 6-0 victory over host Piedmont in the first round of the West Alameda County Conference Foothill division playoffs on May 12.
Cook was dominant, striking out 10 and walking just one. He retired the first 17 hitters he faced before Jonah Cha-Foster reached on an error by first baseman Zac Struthers.
The Highlanders are 15-9 and await the North Coast Section playoffs. Brackets will be announced on May 18.
Matan Antebi went 4-for-4 for Encinal with three RBI and a run scored. Antebi hit a two-run home run in the sixth and also had a double. Eric Proctor was 2-for-3.
William Ferreira took the loss, going the first 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts. George Bishop went 2/3 of an inning, allowing one hit and striking out one. Jack Meyjes went two innings, allowing three runs on two hits with three walks and a strikeout. Diego Delventhal went the final inning, allowing one hit.
Encinal is 17-8 entering a May 15 game with Castro Valley.
The Highlanders ended the regular season by splitting two games with Bishop O’Dowd. The Highlanders got at 7-4 win at Bishop O’Dowd on May 6. Piedmont took a 2-0 lead in the first and never trailed.
Delventhal was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Markos Lagios was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI including a two-run homer in the sixth. Shafer Dando was 2-for-3 and Brandon Dicke was hitless but had two RBI.
Ferreira started and got the win, going 4 2/3 innings and allowing four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Bishop went the final 2 1/3, allowing just a hit with two strikeouts.
Dimitri Williams took the loss for the Dragons, going the first four and allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
Williams also went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.
Bishop O’Dowd returned the favor on May 8 at Piedmont, with Duncan Russell and Ryan Schuh combining on a one-hitter in a 6-0 win. Russell went the first 5 2/3 innings, allowing the one hit to Will Parker and striking out 12 against four walks. Schuh threw the final 1 1/3, striking out two and walking one.
Russell got into trouble in the sixth, hitting two batters and walking one, but Parker was thrown out stealing. With two outs, Schuh came on and walked Ferreira to load the bases. But Schuh then struck out Cha-Foster to end the threat.
Williams doubled in a run in the third to put Bishop O’Dowd up for good. However, Lagios threw to Delventhal who relayed to the catcher Parker to cut down a second run at the plate. Two-run singles by Lucas Patrite and John Teti keyed a five-run fifth to blow the game open.
Meyjes started and took the loss, going four innings and allowing one run on one hit with three strikeouts and a walk. Enzo Ong failed to get an out in the fifth and allowed five runs on four hits and a walk. Lagios put the fire out and went three innings, allowing four hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
