Team completes another successful season
Piedmont High School finished off another strong season with a tie for ninth place at the North Coast Section Division 2 championships on May 17 at Washington-Fremont High School.
Justin and Jonny Phmah won their first two matches in boys doubles for Piedmont. First, the brothers beat Montgomery’s John Lloyd and Aba Filoteo, 21-5, 21-3. Then, they downed Petaluma’s Dakshin Pagadala and Nick Gravem, 21-10, 21-9. Basis Independent Fremont’s team of Hamilton Le and Andy Zhang then defeated the Phmahs, 21-11, 21-11.
The Phmahs outlasted Lick-Wilmerding’s Ashton Wang and Hayden Allen in a consolation bracket match, 21-18, 18-21, 26-24. San Domenico’s Frank Shi and Inka Xiong then ended the run with a 22-24, 21-19, 21-10 victory.
In mixed doubles, Piedmont’s Naomi Treichler and Aman Jajodia won their first match at NCS over Drew’s Evelyn Fong and Jameison Leadbetter, 15-21, 22-20, 21-13. They then fell to Sophia Pezzotti and Collin Kuang of Hercules, 21-10, 21-8. In the consolation bracket, Treichler and Jajodia lost to Emery’s Maanya Balupair and Utkarsh Yalamaddi of Emery, 21-15, 21-3.
In boys singles, Highlander Walden Pan defeated Austen Zhu of Athenian in the first round, 21-17, 21-13. San Domenico’s Gary Wang beat Pan in the second round, 21-12, 21-13. Alvin Zhan of Athenian then downed Pan in the consolation bracket, 21-16, 21-17.
Piedmont’s Evolette Mak was defeated by Montgomery’s Kiana Nephew in the first round of girls singles, 21-14, 21-10.
