Early on the morning of April 18, Piedmont police observed a dark SUV “driving at a high rate of speed” near Grand and Wildwood avenues, according to Piedmont Police Captain Chris Monahan. The vehicle was observed at 2:06 a.m. The vehicle was later described as a black 2024 Mazda CX-90 registered to a rental car holding company.
According to Monahan, when the two people inside saw a patrol vehicle, they made a U-turn and drove eastbound on Wildwood at a high rate of speed. The officer said (according to Captain Monahan), “As I attempted to approach the vehicle for a traffic enforcement stop, the Mazda turned off all lights and continued driving recklessly.”
Captain Monahan said the officer identified the suspects, and shortly thereafter, police saw two men running in the area of Warfield Avenue. Captain Monahan said they could not be confirmed as the two suspects in the vehicle. The Mazda was found nearby in a tow-away zone. It was impounded and the rental company was notified. Captain Monahan said the rental company said a woman had rented the vehicle and it was not known if it was stolen. The Mazda was towed.
