Girls lacrosse | Bishop O’Dowd edges Piedmont

Piedmont High School’s girls lacrosse team lost a heartbreaker at Bishop O’Dowd on April 4, falling to the Dragons, 16-15.

The Highlanders were down 16-13 in the final minutes but rallied to make it close. Peyton Watson scored with two minutes to go, then Friedie Schickedanz followed with 1:21 left.

“(We) could not win possession (after the Schickedanz goal) and O’Dowd burned out the clock,” Piedmont coach Carlton Chan said. “It was disappointing but with Spring Break we were missing (a) lot of starters (on) defense which really hurt us.”

The Highlanders trailed much of the way but never fell behind by too much. The Dragons had a 5-3 lead after one quarter and 10-9 at halftime. Watson finished with seven goals while Schickedanz had five. Chloe Graham, Jameson Sanford and Olive Litwin had single goals for Piedmont. Sophie Santander had three saves.

Lucia Yu scored nine goals and added three assists to lead Bishop O’Dowd. Valentina Pouzo had three goals  Ellie Ryan, Nayla Robinson, Chiara Zunino and Frances Mulligan had the other goals. Naomi Pawek had four saves.

Chan said he put three defenders on Yu, who is the daughter of former Piedmont boys lacrosse coach Alex Yu.

Highlanders beat Lick-Wilmerding

On April 1, Piedmont defeated Lick-Wilmerding-San Francisco at Witter Field, 10-4. Graham had six goals and an assist, while Schickedanz had one goal and five assists. Watson scored three goals and Litwin had an assist. Santander had eight saves.

Sailihah Cann-Polentz scored two goals for the Tigers.

Piedmont will get two weeks off before hosting Acalanes on April 15.
