Highlanders beat Castro Valley, Hayward
Piedmont High School’s boys tennis team took two out of three matches on consecutive days as the Highlanders progressed through the West Alameda County Conference season.
On April 15, Piedmont defeated visiting Castro Valley, 5-2. Lucas Smolko beat Guhan Anandkumar in No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-4. The Highlanders’ Kasper Jansson defeated Daniel Lionel at No. 3, 6-1, 7-5. The Trojans Rahul Ramkumar shut out Emilio Misra at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0. Castro Valley’s Advaith Sathyanand downed Torsten Olsen at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0.
Piedmont swept the doubles. Will Tenney and Nick King shut out Arik Hoffman and Alex Chen at No. 1, 6-0, 6-0. Gianluca Bini and Luca LaForte beat Ryan Mu and Matthew Rodriguez at No. 2, 6-1, 7-6 (8). Hunter Fasteau and Joey Assalian defeated Maxim Boychuk and Anson Chan at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0.
The next day, the Highlanders beat a short-handed visiting Hayward team, 7-0 with the No. 3 doubles match defaulted. Misra defeated Paul Duenas at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1. LaForte won by the same score over Evin Griggs at No. 2. Assalian shut out Jose Munoz at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0. Robert Pinella downed Damian Rohl at No. 4, 6-1, 6-0.
Maximo Miller and Ryan Ehteshami beat Felix Ruiz and Malcolm Senegal at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-1. Ethan Hammond and Rafael Centano defeated Brandon Perez and Dani Guerra at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0.
On April 17, Piedmont fell at home to Berkeley, 5-2. Smolko beat Max Kirjanovski at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Misra defeated Julius Braun at No. 4, 6-2, 7-5.
The rest was all Yellowjackets. Yanir Charney-Weintraub beat King at No. 2, 6-0, 6-4. Kaden Maultsby defeated Tenney at No. 3 in the match of the day, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
In doubles, Ben Taylor and Sasha Balusubramanian downed LaForte and Bini at No. 1, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. Will Herndon and Andrew Regan beat Fasteau and Pinella at No. 2, 6-3, 6-3. Henry Andreini and Otter Carychao defeated Olsen and Ehteshami, 6-2, 6-3.
Piedmont was next scheduled to play at Marin Academy on April 22, followed by hosting Alameda the next day.
