Baseball team beats Arroyo, Concord
Piedmont High School’s baseball team moved to 9-4 on the season, taking two out of three games in the first week of April.
The Highlanders beat Arroyo on the road on April 3, 5-0. George Bishop went the distance for a four-hit shutout for Piedmont. He struck out eight and walked one.
The Highlanders got all the runs he needed in a three-run third. Diego Delventhal doubled and Markos Lagios singled him in. Will Parker then tripled for a 2-0 lead. Shafer Dando followed that with a single to score Parker.
Delventhal singled in a run in the fourth and Mike Martin singled in a run in the seventh. Delventhal went 3-for-4 while Parker and Martin were both 2-for-3. Piedmont piled up 11 hits against three Dons pitchers. Istvan Paulovits went the first 3 2/3 innings and took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits with one strikeout and one walk. Gabe De La Cruz went 2-for-2 for Arroyo.
On April 5, the Highlanders opened a tournament at Concord by beating the hosts, 6-1 in a game shortened to six innings. William Ferreira and Enzo Ong combined to limit the Bears to four hits. Ferreira went the first 3 2/3 innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Ong finished with 2 1/3 innings, allowing one hit with two walks.
The Highlanders got four in the fourth to take control of the game. Trailing 1-0, Parker drew a leadoff walk. Martin doubled him in. Martin later scored on a fielder’s choice to give Piedmont the lead. Jonah Cha-Foster tripled in a run and Ferreira doubled Cha-Foster in.
Cha-Foster was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and the two RBI. Justin Tougeron was 2-for-3 for Concord. He also took the loss, pitching five innings and allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts and four walks.
On April 7, the Highlanders fell to Encinal in the tournament, 2-0 despite not allowing a hit. Kyle Cook went the distance for the Jets, allowing three hits and striking out five against three walks. Lagios was 2-for-3 for Piedmont and Jack Meyjes had Piedmont’s other hit. Meyjes went the first three innings and took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) with one strikeout and three walks. Jimmy Lagios went the final three, striking out one and walking two.
Encinal scored single runs in the second and third. Two Highlanders errors produced the first run and the second scored on a sacrifice fly after two walks and a hit batsmen.
Piedmont was scheduled to conclude the tournament on April 9 against Head-Royce. The Highlanders will then take a week off before facing Alameda in a home-and-home series. The first game will be at Alameda on April 16, with the rematch scheduled at Piedmont on April 18.
