Baseball scores four in seventh against WACC rival
Piedmont High School’s baseball team rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to steal an 8-7 win over visiting Alameda on April 18. That completed a two-game sweep over one of the Highlanders West Alameda County Conference rivals.
Trailing 7-4 entering the inning, Piedmont got back-to-back singles from Markos Lagios and Will Parker to start the inning. Connor Kniep then replaced Tam Pullman-Letourneau on the mound. Shafer Dando drew a walk to load the bases. One out later, Mike Martin reached on an error to score Lagios.
Jordan Vo then was hit by a pitch, forcing in another run. Will Ferreira then drew a walk to force in the tying run.
One out later, Diego Delventhal singled to right to bring in the winning run.
Parker went 3-for-4 on the day with an RBI. Delventhal went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Jonah Cha-Foster was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Jack Meyjes went the first five innings on the mound for the Highlanders, allowing four runs (none earned) on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk. George Bishop went the final two for the win, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with a walk.
Kniep took the loss for the Hornets and took the loss, allowing two unearned runs on one hit. Pullman-Letourneau went six-plus, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Sam Berger went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Parker Nomura was 2-for-3 while Kance Tran was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Highlanders went up 4-1 with two runs each in the third and fourth. Alameda got three runs each in the fifth and sixth.
On April 19, Piedmont lost to visiting Oakland Tech, 13-6 in a nonleague contest. A five-run third gave the Bulldogs the lead for good. Jimmy Lagios took the loss, going the first 2 1/3 innings and allowing seven runs (five earned) on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Enzo Ong went the next 3 2/3, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks with a strikeout. Cha-Foster pitched the seventh, allowing three runs on four hits with a strikeout.
Elias Thompson got the win for Oakland Tech, going five innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. Lee Tshosane went the final two, allowing one run on one hit with five strikeouts and four walks.
Parker was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Markos Lagios was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Delventhal drew four walks and scored three runs.
Hayden Burton went 3-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored for the Bulldogs. Rasheed Pittman was 2-for-4 with five RBI. Eric Johnson was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Jordan Smith was 1-for-3 with three runs scored.
Piedmont led 4-2 entering the top of the third. Burton singled in two to tie the score. A fielder’s choice, where Burton beat the throw to third, knocked in the go-ahead run. Kalen Thomas and Johnson later had RBI-singles to make it 7-4.
Piedmont next has a two-game series against Castro Valley. They’ll play at Piedmont on April 23 and at Castro Valley on April 25.
