Baseball gets back into WACC season.
The Piedmont High School baseball team went on the road and picked up a 5-1 victory over Alameda in West Alameda County Conference Foothill division play on April 16. Will Parker went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI for the Highlanders. Markos Lagios went 1-for-2 with a double and two walks as well as a run scored. Diego Delventhal was 1-for-2 with an RBI, Jack Meyjes was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Shafer Dando was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
William Ferreira went 6 1/3 innings to get the win, allowing a run on four hits with four strikeouts and four walks. George Bishop got the final two outs, allowing two hits.
On April 9, Piedmont concluded the Concord Tournament with a 7-5 win over Head-Royce. The Highlanders (designated the home team) came back from a 5-2 deficit with one in the fifth and four in the sixth. Lagios doubled in the go-ahead runs in the sixth. A bases-loaded hit by pitch drawn by Delventhal had tied the score. Jordan Vo knocked in Dando with a fielder’s choice to start the scoring in the sixth.
Piedmont got on the board first in the bottom of the second when Brandon Dicke scored on an error. Ezra Goldfarb tied the score in the top of the third with an RBI-single. Parker put the Highlanders back on top when he singled in Lagios in the bottom of the frame.
Davis Lynch tripled in two runs to regain the lead for the Jayhawks in the top of the fourth. Kaden Choi followed with another triple to make it 4-2. Kento Tsuji tripled in a run in the fifth to put Head-Royce up 5-2.
A wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth scored a Piedmont run to make it 5-3. Enzo Ong pitched a scoreless inning in relief to secure the win. He allowed one hit and struck out two. Delventhal pitched the seventh to nail down the save. He walked two and struck out two. George Bishop went the first four innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Ferreira went one inning, allowing a run on two hits with one strikeout.
Lynch took the loss, going the final two innings and allowing five runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Mikael Akpala went the first four, allowing two runs on two hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Lagios was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Ferreira was 1-for-1 with two runs scored. Lynch was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Jayhawks. Graham Sanger was 3-for-3 with a run scored. Choi was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Piedmont (11-4) was scheduled to host Alameda on April 18. The next day, the Highlanders will host Oakland Tech in a nonleague matchup.
