Who’s that Good Dog?

Family: Moira Chapman, Dave, Aidan and Kai Hsu (plus Rosy, a smallish boa constrictor snake)

Pet: Shiloh

Age: 6 3/4 years old

Breed: Australian shepherd

Adoption story: We picked up 9 week-old Shiloh from a family in Sacramento on a very hot Labor Day in 2018. She was lethargic and calm but showed her true energetic Aussie self over the next few days home and hasn’t slowed down since.

Likes: Shiloh loves being with her family as much as possible and getting treats and belly rubs from us. She gives great kisses and does so every chance she gets, especially on her dad’s face. She also loves to be off-leash with her doggie friends, chasing balls, going on long hikes in the hills or the mountains, herding dogs and people, playing tug of war, rolling around in the grass and being in the snow. She enjoys eating fish skin and chewing our smelly socks.

Dislikes: She doesn’t like being without her peeps and being left alone. She dislikes the vet, waiting for the first walk of the day, and riding in the car. She also dislikes all kinds of hand tools and machines such as brooms, shovels, vacuums, blowers, weed-eaters, and folks in uniforms wielding any of these items.

Interesting facts: Aussies are a herding breed and Shiloh has a strong herding drive. Last spring, we took her to a ranch in Sacramento to herd goats. From the minute we arrived she was super excited and focused on the animals. Then she rounded them up like she’d been doing it all her life. It was such a heart-warming experience to see her doing the work she was born to do.

Anything else: Shiloh is smart, mischievous, and always ready to push the play button. She’s a scaredy dog, especially at the vet, and she barks at anything spicy such as garlic and onions. She sings when she really wants something — some would call it howling. We adore her and this quote sums up why: “There is nothing truer in this world than the love of a good dog” (Mira Grant).
