East Bay Municipal Utility District is looking for a tenant to occupy the outdoor performance site in Orinda formerly used by the California Shakespeare Theater known as Cal Shakes.
Just north of state Highway 242 on the eastern side of the Caldecott Tunnel, the six-acre site was last used for a Cal Shakes performance in September. After 50 years, the group dissolved later last year.
EBMUD is looking for either a single entity or partners with the ability to operate the space for community performing arts. The agency wants a group that can take on a 15-year lease.
The amphitheater at 100 Gateway Boulevard in the Siesta Valley has a central stage and seats about 540 people. An indoor space can accommodate 20 or more people for workshops and meetings.
There’s also a concession area, sound room, ticket booth, a paved plaza near permanent restrooms, a building with indoor meeting space and kitchenette, adjacent grounds with multiple picnic areas, a landscaped walking path, an access road, and a parking area for 200 cars.

EBMUD said it requires its tenant to incorporate sustainable practices and/or watershed education into its operation or programs at the facility.
The agency said it would retain the right to use the facility for educational activities, workshops, meetings and other community outreach events during period of non-performance periods.
Interested parties can inspect the property between April 1 and April 15 and submit proposals by May 20.
EBMUD said interested parties will need to comply with local ordinances related to noise levels and operational hours.
