The Blotter | Trespasser arrested on King Avenue

Man claimed to own home; had previous incident

Piedmont Police arrested a trespasser in front of a house on King Avenue on Feb. 8 after the man claimed to own the house.

The incident began at 12:39 a.m. when the homeowner reported that a man rang the doorbell when the resident wasn’t home. The doorbell camera showed the male suspect, who was later identified as Leroy James. The suspect allegedly looked around the front of the house and did not respond to the resident’s attempt to communicate.

At 12:47, the resident returned home and found the suspect still there. The resident said he told the suspect to leave the premises, according to Piedmont Police Captain Chris Monahan. He said that officers came to the house and the suspect told them he was the homeowner and that he would not leave until he was allowed in.

Captain Monahan said police determined the suspect was not the home owner and told him to leave. The suspect refused. A records check showed that a previous incident happened on Jan. 31 across the street from the house. Captain Monahan said the records check also showed the suspect was on parole for burglary.

Captain Monahan said based on the suspect’s “comments, his unwillingness to leave the premises and his prior loitering charge,” police arrested him for trespass and took him to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.

A hit-and-run occurred on Feb. 11 at Grand and Greenbank avenues at about 5:56 p.m. A juvenile was found in the middle of Grand Avenue, according to Captain Monahan. He said witnesses said that a white pickup hit the victim and continued on Grand.

Police used multiple forms of information, including city cameras, parts of vehicle on scene and witness statements to identify a suspect vehicle: a white 1998 Ford F250 pickup. The vehicle was registered to an Alfredo Reyes of San Leandro, Captain Monahan said. The vehicle was found near the listed address and Captain Monahan said parts found on the scene matched the vehicle.

Cameras near the address captured the suspect walking from the truck to his residence. Piedmont police went to the address and found the registered owner and took him to Santa Rita Jail. Reyes was charged with hit-and-run with injuries and reckless driving. There was no further information given on the victim.
