The Blotter | Man arrested for hardware store robbery

A man was arrested after attempting to steal an air compressor from the Ace Hardware store on Grand Avenue. The incident happened Feb. 2 at 12:59 p.m. Multiple calls came into Piedmont Police over the incident, according to Piedmont Police Department Captain Chris Monahan. He said employees had attempted to stop the theft.

Piedmont police arrived and detained the suspect, identified as Darryl Dobrinski. A check showed he was on probation in Alameda County, according to Captain Monahan. Police reviewed the video surveillance, which showed the suspect taking the item and elbowing a store employee, according to Captain Monahan. He said the employee suffered injuries to his hand and back. Dobrinski was taken to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin and booked for robbery and a probation violation.


A male suspect was arrested for trespassing on Jan. 31 after multiple calls came in about someone allegedly loitering on King Avenue. The incident happened at 12:27 p.m. Police made contact with the individual, who was on parole, according to Captain Monahan. He said police had contacted the same person the day before. The suspect was not trespassing at the time and was told to leave the area. Approximately 20 minutes later, a new call came in accusing the suspect of jumping fences in the backyards of multiple residences, according to Captain Monahan. The suspect was found and detained on King. No residents wanted to press charges, according to Captain Monahan, but police decided to arrest the suspect and take him to Santa Rita Jail on a parole hold. His parole officer was contacted.


On Feb. 3, a hedge trimmer was stolen from a pickup truck parked on St. James Drive. The incident took place at approximately 2:30 p.m. The report said a suspect or suspects exited a black 2018-21 Honda Civic and took the item, according to Captain Monahan. The value of the item is $500. The suspect vehicle had a switched license plate according to Captain Monahan.

On the same day, a vehicle with the same description was involved in the vandalism of the door lock of a 2015 Nissan NV 2500 work van parked on Hampton Road at approximately 2 p.m. The work van belonged to an electrician according to the police log and the damage was approximately $500.


On Feb. 5, a black 2015 Honda Accord was observed by police traveling at a high rate of speed and straddling the bicycle lane on Grand Avenue, according to Captain Monahan. The incident happened at 11:13 p.m. The vehicle was pulled over and the male driver was “determined to be suspected of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol,” according to Captain Monahan. A blood draw warrant was obtained and the suspect was taken to Santa Rita Jail.


Three vehicles were reported stolen within two hours on Feb. 1. It is not known if they were related. The first vehicle was reported taken from Wildwood Avenue, the second from Sandringham Road and the third from Fairview Avenue. The reports came in between 10:52 a.m.-12:41 p.m.
