The Piedmont Community Church gymnasium was abuzz on Saturday, Feb. 8 as Scouts from K – 5th grade and their families brought their homemade wooden race cars to compete in the annual Pinewood Derby. The friendly competition is a staple of Scouting groups around the country in which Scouts must transform a block of wood, four wheels, and four nails for axles into gravity-powered race cars. Competitors can win awards for speed, creativity, and craftsmanship.
