Piedmont High School’s girls soccer team lost another tough match on Feb. 5, this time falling 1-0 at Castro Valley.
The Highlanders fell to 5-8-2 on the season, 2-5-1 in West Alameda County Conference Foothill division play. It was Piedmont’s second consecutive 1-0 loss and the fourth WACC game the Highlanders lost by a single goal.
Castro Valley got its goal in the 38th minute off of a throw-in play. Piedmont had a chance to clear the ball but couldn’t. Hannah Sommerhalter sent a left-footed shot to the right of the net off the hand of a diving Friedie Schickedanz.
The Highlanders had offensive chances. Ryo Woltag had a shot saved in the 10th minute.
Juliana Thornborrow got a long shot off that was saved in the 55th minute. Eliza Hammond had a direct kick saved in the 71st minute.
Arabella Pey got a nice shot off of a corner kick for the Trojans in the 75th minute.
In the 76th minute, Piedmont’s Kyla Williams collided with Castro Valley’s Paige Pacheco and Williams ended up down on the turf for over three minutes. She eventually got up and walked off under her own power.
Louisa Symkowick missed the game for the Highlanders due to injury.
Piedmont next plays at Bishop O’Dowd on Feb. 11.
