Family: Rod, Cindy, Caitlin and Andrea Boothby
Pet: Maggie
Age: 4 ¾ years old
Breed: Golden Retriever
Adoption story: We adopted Maggie when she was 13 months old. Sadly, her previous family lost their home in an Oregon wildfire and couldn’t keep her. She was returned to the breeder and we just happened to call after our dog Daisy passed away from cancer. When we arrived, we were shown a few Goldens but our daughter, Caitlin, really wanted Maggie. We had to pay an extra $500 for her since she was already trained. Maggie quickly realized after joining our family that we are not big disciplinarians. We often joke that she has conveniently forgotten her “trained skills.” She will only do a trick if she’s in the mood and a high-reward food is involved.
Likes: She loves car rides, strangers, tickles from strangers, and food. She loves meeting new people and is shocked when people don’t stop to say hi to her. She enjoys the cold floor on a warm day and lying in front of the fan.
Dislikes: Going for a second daily walk with Rod. She will go on a first walk with Rod, but only if it includes a car ride to Piedmont Park.
Interesting facts: Maggie has helped us foster over a dozen puppies from Oakland Animal Services. The puppies seem to feel safer with Maggie and follow her around. She is very patient with them. Maggie has also helped a few neighborhood kids get over their fear of dogs. She loves it when kids say hi and is very gentle.
Anything Else: We need to bribe her to go outside to potty before she goes to bed. She will only go for cheese, nothing else. And the cheese-only mandate applies only to the nighttime ritual.
