The Piedmont Police Department announced its first charges under a new law approved by voters in November that allows a felony charge for theft for suspects with at least two prior convictions.
On January 8, a theft of packages was reported on Winsor Avenue at approximately 12 noon. A doorbell camera recorded the alleged theft. The packages contained three Lululemon articles of clothing, according to Piedmont Police Captain Chris Monahan, and the suspect fled in a blue Pontiac Montana. He said the value of the clothing was $95.59.
The woman accused of the crime was arrested the next day during a meeting with her probation officer in Oakland. A records check showed she had three prior convictions for theft, according to Captain Monahan. Proposition 36 was approved by voters in November and created section 666.1 in the California Penal Code which after conviction can jail the individual for up to one year in county jail.
The suspect was taken to Santa Rosa Jail in Dublin.
On January 5, a 2016 Yamaha motorcycle was recovered on Santa Clara Avenue. The motorcycle was towed.
During the investigation, a missing person was found and released to her family, according to Captain Monahan.
