Supervisor Keith Carson sends final note to Alameda County District 5 constituents

"It's been an incredible 30+ years serving you," wrote Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson in a social media post to his 5th District constituents this week, announcing his decision not to run for another term on the board. (Alameda County Board of Supervisors via Bay City News)

Supervisor Keith Carson announced his retirement in 2024. Nikki Fortunato Bas, a former Oakland City Councilmember, was elected to his seat in the Nov. 5 election and will step into Carson’s seat on Jan. 6, 2025 after serving as Oakland’s interim mayor when that position was declared vacant on Dec. 17, 2024 due to the successful recall of Mayor Sheng Thao .

To the Residents of the Fifth District:

This is our final official communication from my office and staff. It has been an honor and privilege to have served these past 32 years as your elected county supervisor. For 32 years, my team and I have worked every single day, along with county staff, Community Based Organizations, and other business and governmental representatives to serve the residents of Alameda County and the Fifth District.

County government across the country is recognized as a safety net, constitutionally responsible to oversee and provide for the health, safety, and welfare for all of its residents, as well as provide local government services to all of the unincorporated areas. Seven days a week, 24 hours of every day, county employees are at work providing the much needed services for their residents and will continue to provide these services to the 1,750,000 residents of Alameda County.

Again, on behalf of the employees of Alameda County, I want to thank the residents of Alameda County for giving me the privilege to have served you this past 32 years. Every day it was my intended goal to leave Alameda County a better place than what I inherited when I was elected in 1992.

I invite you to review what collectively WE have achieved over the last 32 years here.

I wish you and yours the very best in the years to come!

-Keith Carson
