PHS musical ‘Once Upon a Mattress’ on stage at Alan Harvey Jan. 30 – Feb. 2

Theo Ferguson, Danielle Zaroukian, Zayd Mahmood sing 'Normandy'

Piedmont High School presents Once Upon a Mattress January 30 through February 2. Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the classic tale The Princess and the Pea provides some side-splitting shenanigans. Composer Mary Rodgers and lyricist/librettists Marshall Barer and Jay Thompson adapted the Hans Christian Andersen tale to create the musical comedy.

Close to 50 student performers, 20 student band/orchestra members, and over 10 stage crew members collaborate to bring the community this uplifting show. Directed by PHS Dance and English teacher Amy Moorhead, the orchestra is conducted by PHS Band and Orchestra teacher, Trevor Meseroll. Local professionals Claire Chaix and Sandra Peter handle the vocal direction.

The production is participating in the inaugural BroadwaySF High School Musical Theatre Awards in San Francisco, hosted by BroadwaySF. This program is a Regional Awards Program as part of The National High School Musical Theatre Awards® (NHSMTA®), otherwise known as The Jimmy Awards®, which results in, among other local awards, two students being awarded the chance to compete in New York City with over 100 other students from all over the country. An amazing opportunity for young theater artists!
