Cleo Afsar scored 20 points to lead Piedmont High School’s girls basketball team to a 72-25 win at San Leandro on Jan. 9 in the opener of West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division play. Asfar also had four steals. The Highlanders are now 11-1 on the season.
Brianna Webb had 15 points and six rebounds. Jenelle Solis had 10 points, six assists and four steals. Andrea Martin had nine points and four rebounds. Savannah Dennig had eight points and eight rebounds. Taylor White added seven points and six rebounds while Saniyah Johnson contributed five points, four rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots.
Alana Daly led the Pirates with eight points.
Piedmont shut out San Leandro in the first quarter, taking a 27-0 lead.
On Jan. 7, the Highlanders defeated California for the second time in a couple of weeks, this time at Cal High, 60-55. Piedmont had beaten the Grizzlies at a tournament in Southern California in December.
Martin had 22 points and six rebounds. Solis had 18 points, eight assists and three steals. Webb had 14 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Lauren Yee scored 21 for California. Sofie Addiego added nine points and five rebounds. Rachel Osicka grabbed 10 rebounds while scoring four points.
On Jan. 3, Piedmont defeated Clayton Valley 61-52 at the SI20 Classic at Carondelet. Martin led the way with 29 points and 12 rebounds along with seven steals, four assists and four blocked shots. Webb had 13 points and six rebounds. White had 12 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Solis had seven assists and five points.
