Girls basketball | Piedmont overcomes loss of Martin

Piedmont High School’s girls basketball team had to overcome the loss of Andrea Martin, who was out sick for the Highlanders Jan. 23 game at Alameda.

No problem for Piedmont. The Highlanders recorded a 54-44 win.

Briana Webb had 19 points and eight rebounds, while Jenelle Solis had 17 points, six assists and three steals.
Taylor White had 12 rebounds, four points, four steals and three assists. Cleo Afsar had six points, three steals and two assists. Savannah Dennig had four points and three rebounds.

Jennalyn Apodaca led Alameda with 16 points. Juliana Johnson had nine.

Piedmont jumped out to a 16-8 lead after one quarter. The Hornets held tough in the middle quarters, and it was 38-36 Highlanders entering the fourth quarter. Webb and Solis each scored six points in the final period as Piedmont drew clear.

Piedmont is scheduled to play at Antelope for a nonleague game on Jan. 25. The Highlanders are 14-3 on the season, 2-1 in West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division play.
