Girls basketball | Piedmont hammers Liberty, falls to O’Dowd

Piedmont High School’s girls basketball team beat visiting Liberty on Jan. 11 in a nonleague matchup, 69-11. The Highlanders then dropped a West Alameda County Conference game at home against Bishop O’Dowd on Jan. 14, 56-47.

Piedmont is now 12-2 on the season, 1-1 in WACC Foothill Division play.

The Highlanders jumped out to a 24-1 lead after one quarter against Liberty. The score was 50-3 at halftime. Jenelle Solis led the scoring with 14 points. She also had five assists. Andrea Martin had 11 points and seven rebounds while Briana Webb had 11 points and eight rebounds. Saniyah Johnson had eight points and eight rebounds. Cleo Afsar had seven points. Taylor White had six points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Savannah Dennig had six points, five rebounds and four assists. Shakila Zuberi contributed six points, five rebounds and three assists.

Leosha Baker led the Lions with six points.

An 18-8 third quarter led to Bishop O’Dowd’s victory. Piedmont held a 33-29 lead at halftime. Zuberi led the Highlanders with 11 points and four rebounds. White had eight points, six rebounds and four assists. Martin had eight points, five rebounds and four blocked shots. Webb had eight points and three rebounds. Solis was held to six points but handed out five assists and grabbed three rebounds. Dennig had seven rebounds to go along with four points.

Jayla Stokes led the Dragons with 23 points. Simdi Chukwu had 11 points while Madison Gordon had eight points and four blocked shots.

Piedmont will next face the Menlo School at the MLK Showcase on Jan. 18 at St. Mary’s College Prep-Stockton. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
