What’s at stake for Piedmont schools? Bridging the budget gap

PUSD students helped to launch this year’s Giving Campaign, now in its final weeks.

The Piedmont Unified School District (PUSD) finds itself at a critical crossroads. While the passage of Measure P will provide some financial relief next year, the district still faces significant challenges due to escalating costs. The community’s generosity through the Giving Campaign is vital to avoid further cuts that could jeopardize the quality of education Piedmont families have long cherished.

Last year’s budget reductions have already been felt, with larger class sizes and reduced library hours among the most visible impacts. Despite these sacrifices, the district remains in a precarious position. Without sufficient support, additional reductions may become unavoidable — cuts that could undermine core programs and the district’s ability to attract and retain talented educators.

At a pivotal meeting last year, the PUSD Board of Education emphasized the need for unity and community action. Facing millions in proposed budget cuts, the Board highlighted the importance of collective sacrifice to fund a teacher pay raise over three years. Passionate testimony from students, parents, and teachers illuminated the stakes, with concerns ranging from potential reductions to Special Education, art programs, counseling, and nursing services to fears of increased class sizes and diminished opportunities for students.

The Piedmont Education Foundation (PEF) continues to play a crucial role in addressing these financial shortfalls. However, as PEF Executive Director Heather Frank noted, emergency fundraising alone cannot solve systemic funding challenges. Advocacy for long-term state funding reform remains essential, but immediate community support through donations is critical to closing the current gap and preserving PUSD’s standards of excellence.

Community members are encouraged to visit the PEF Giving Campaign meter, located in the PEF office window in Veteran’s Hall to track participation progress, and the thermometer outside of Mulberry’s to view funds raised. To date, 50% of PUSD parents have made a contribution to the Giving Campaign, and these donations, added to those of the broader community, total $3 million.

The Giving Campaign is working toward a goal of $4 million to continue to help PUSD meet its obligations. As a community, we have the power to ensure that Piedmont schools not only survive but thrive, maintaining their legacy of excellence for generations to come.
