Boys basketball hits winter break at 5-4

Piedmont High School’s boys basketball team dropped two of three at the Acalanes tournament on December 12-14. Then, the Highlanders fell to Campolindo, leaving them at 5-4 when they hit winter break.

Piedmont opened the tournament with a 48-34 loss to Woodcreek-Roseville. The Highlanders had trouble making shots throughout the tournament.

“All three games we shot 20 of 73 (27 percent),” Piedmont coach Ben Spencer said.

Woodcreek took a 20-14 lead at halftime and was able to extend it to 29-19 after three. Ravi Silverberg led the Highlanders with 20 points. Dillon Casey had eight. Only four Piedmont players scored points.

The Timberwolves were led by Michael Kirby Jr.’s 13 points. Will Munoz had nine points and Max VanLaningham added eight.

On December 13, Piedmont had a 66-56 win over Pleasant Grove-Elk Grove. The Highlanders took control in the first half, leading 26-14 after one and 38-25 at halftime.

Silverberg again led the way with 20 points. Casey had 14 and Lucian Fang Ring added 12. This time seven players scored for Piedmont.

The Eagles were led by 14 points from Pharrell Williams. Christopher Billy and A.J. Breslin each scored eight.

The next night, the Highlanders lost to International-San Francisco, 49-43. Again, shooting was a problem and Piedmont tried to rally late after trailing 37-27 entering the fourth quarter.

Casey led the Highlanders with 18 points. Beach Lorin had nine.

Conor Maguire led the Jaguars with 20 points. Will Savill-Welch had 15.

Piedmont then lost at home to Campolindo on December 21, 67-52. Ren Marchetti and Gavin Rendle led the Cougars with 13 points apiece. The Highlanders scorers were not available.

Piedmont’s next scheduled game is January 4 at home against St. Joseph Notre Dame. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
