Three PHS ’23 students killed in early morning crash

Piedmont was in shock on Wednesday morning with the news that three members of the PHS class of 2023 died in an early morning crash when a Tesla Cybertruck crashed and caught fire on Hampton Road near King Avenue. One other occupant of the car survived but has serious injuries.

Police dispatch at 3:08 a.m. received a notification from the vehicle that it had been involved in the crash and shortly afterward someone also called to report the crash and resulting fire on Hampton Road between Sea View and King avenues, Piedmont Police Capt. Chris Monahan said.

Officers and firefighters arrived to find the truck and learned that someone who saw the crash was able to pull one of the four occupants out, though the other three people in the Cybertruck died. The person who survived was taken to a hospital with serious injuries but is in stable condition, Monahan said.

The police captain said investigators have determined that the Cybertruck was not stolen or being pursued. The cause of the crash is under investigation and Hampton Road was re-opened to traffic by 9 a.m.
