Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day

On November 14, 1960, 6-year-old first grader Ruby Bridges made history when she integrated William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans. To keep her safe, she was escorted by four federal marshals. Her courage initiated the desegregation of New Orleans’ public schools.

Affinity mentors host the gathering in Piedmont Park.

Now more than 60 years later, Ruby wants to make sure that all children can safely go to school and learn. Last year approximately 750 PUSD students and community members joined over 650,000 across America in a Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day.

This event marks Piedmont’s second annual city-wide Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. It included students, parents, and staff from PUSD schools. We were honored to walk together to school to commemorate Ruby Bridges’ bravery and to embody her message of kindness, respect, and inclusion.

This event was sponsored by SERVES and The Piedmont Affinity Mentors.
