On Wednesday, Nov. 20 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Piedmont Junior Running Club will hold its second annual race at Dracena Park.
Over 70 fourth and fifth graders from the three Piedmont elementary schools will be participating in this approximately one mile race that encompasses the entire park. There will be finisher medals for all runners, trophies to the top three finishers by gender and a perpetual trophy that will be awarded to the school with the lowest combined time.
This race is the culmination of the fall season for the Junior program and most of the kids have been training for it since early September.
Park users kindly asked to avoid the park during the race
Please note, Dracena Park users are being asked to not visit the Park while the event is taking place on Nov. 20 for the safety of the runners and spectators. The houses that border the park will receive a notice about the event and there will be event notice flyers posted throughout the park. The public’s cooperation is requested and we are sorry for any temporary inconvenience that this may cause park users.
The Piedmont Junior Running Club is an after-school running program for fourth- and fifth-graders offered by the Piedmont Recreation Department. It was started in 2013 and over the years approximately a thousand boys and girls have taken part. Many of them have continued to run at both the middle and high school levels in Piedmont. There has been renewed interest in the Junior program in recent years and with the re-opening of Witter Field, this could result in more young athletes participating in the program.
