Mei Assalian shot an 89 at the North Coast Section Division 1 golf championships on Nov. 4 at Paradise Valley Golf Course in Fairfield. Assalian’s scorecard tied for 55th out of 139 golfers.
“Yeah, it was fun,” Assalian said. She added that she didn’t play quite as well as she had hoped. “I started with a 41 and I finished with a 48,” she said. Her highlight came on the front nine. “I had a long birdie,” she said. “I put it six feet away from 150 yards.”
Assalian hasn’t decided on which college she will attend yet. She does not expect to play competitive golf there but is open to playing on a club-level team. “I’ll keep playing golf in the future,” she said. “I’ll continue playing and meeting people through it.”
She said she enjoyed watching the Piedmont team evolve over the past four years. The Highlanders qualified for the NCS Division 2 championships this season. “The invitational at Antioch was really fun,” Assalian said. “We usually don’t do things outside of league. It’s a different experience.”
Lily Peng of Carondelet won the NCS tournament with a 68, edging Alyssa Lim of James Logan, who shot a 69. Elsa Hsieh of Irvington was third with a 70. Dougherty Valley won the team competition with a total of 373. Bishop O’Dowd was second with a 401 with Carondelet third at 407.
The top three teams plus the top five finishers not on a qualifying team qualified for the California Interscholastic Federation Northern California regional on Nov. 12 at the Berkeley Country Club in El Cerrito.
