Letter to the Editor | Yes on Measure P to keep schools, property values strong

As a Piedmont graduate who returned to raise my family here, I know how important our schools are — not only for students, but for our pocketbooks, too. Whether or not you have children enrolled, our schools are working for you by keeping demand for homes high and protecting property values. Investing in our schools through Measure P is an investment in your home’s value.

That is why I am voting YES on Measure P.

Measure P is an essential parcel tax that will provide funds for attracting and retaining high-quality teachers and offering advanced programs. This commitment to excellence will continue to draw families to Piedmont, ensuring a vibrant housing market that benefits all homeowners. Voting YES on Measure P is necessary for our teachers, the long-term health of our community, and our home values.

Our community stands out for its willingness to support our schools through a long tradition of parcel taxes and private donations. Piedmont residents have passed previous versions of this critical parcel tax nine times over the years, helping to keep our schools strong.

Strong schools mean strong property values — it’s that simple. Please join me in voting YES on Measure P.

  1. Quality schools equate directly to strong property values. A larger home will cost more initially and will sell for more than a smaller home of equivalent quality. A family in a large home will likely put more children in our schools than a smaller home. In fairness those using more school resources and those that financially benefit at time of sale from our quality schools should pay a tax based on use and financial reward. While community support and resources are overwhelmingly in favor of Proposition P, certainly by 2027 the School Board should go to a single progressive tax structure based on square foot of residence.
