Football | Piedmont moves to 4-1 with rout of Dougherty Valley

Markos Lagios threw for 276 yards and four touchdowns to help lead Piedmont High School’s boys football team to a 41-0 win over visiting Dougherty Valley on Oct. 4 at Witter Field. Sam Shelby caught nine passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns for the Highlanders (4-1). Lagios also ran for 93 yards and a touchdown.

Piedmont next plays at Hayward on October 11.

The game opened with both teams going three-and-out on their first possessions. The Highlanders then took over at their own 23. They went on a six-play drive with Tommy Ashton scoring from 19 yards out. Shelby’s kick made it 7-0. On the ensuing kickoff, Vicente Estrada muffed the ball and Miles Silver fell on it for Piedmont at the Dougherty Valley 23. Five plays later, Lagios scored on a 12-yard run and it was 14-0.

Piedmont’s defense was excellent, holding the Wildcats to three-and-outs on three of their eight possessions. Doughtery Valley had just 122 yards in total offense on the night.

The Highlanders made it 21-0 with eight minutes, 56 seconds left in the second quarter when Lagios hit Jack Meyjes on a 22-yard touchdown pass. Shelby took a short pass from Lagios and turned it into a 65-yard touchdown in the third quarter to make it 28-0. He took another short pass from Lagios and turned it into a 79-yard
touchdown later in the period to make it 35-0. Lagios connected with Xavier Henderson on a 3-yard touchdown pass to complete the scoring in the fourth quarter.

Lagios finished 18 of 25 passing. Ashton ran for 60 yards on 11 carries. Brandon Dicke had four solo tackles and two assisted tackles and two tackles for losses to lead the defense. Henderson also had four solo and two assisted tackles.
