Piedmont High School’s boys water polo team had a big weekend at the Vintage High School tournament in Napa, going 4-0 to win the B Division.
The Highlanders opened play with a 13-10 win over San Rafael on Sept. 20. Rylan Patty led the way with five goals, an assist and a steal. Elles Krieckhaus scored three goals with two assists and Leo Hurwitz had two goals, an assist and a steal. Luke McAuliffe had 10 saves in goal.
Next came a 17-1 rout of Justin-Siena-Napa. Hayden Jahn had four goals and a steal to lead Piedmont. Krieckhaus, Hurwitz and Zach Dupree had three goals apiece. Patty scored twice. Hurwitz added three assissts. McAuliffe had six saves.
On Sept. 21, the Highlanders defeated Ukiah, 15-10. Krieckhaus and Hurwitz each scored four times to lead Piedmont. Patty had three goals and two assists. Charlie Wright had two goals while Dupree and Henry Stein each scored one.
The team completed the tournament with a 10-8 win over Marin Catholic. The Highlanders built a 10-4 lead then hung on for the victory. Patty came up huge, scoring seven goals. Krieckhaus had the other three for Piedmont. McAuliffe recorded nine saves.
“Small team played with a lot of heart,” Highlanders coach John Savage said. “Essentially no subs in the championship game in the B bracket. Lots of progress. Big weekend for the boys.”
Piedmont is now 7-4 on the season. On Sept. 17, the Highlanders lost at Castro Valley, 20-8.
