The Drink | White Port & Tonic

A traditional Portuguese apéritif, White Port & Tonic might just be the perfect summer sip — it’s light, refreshing, and lower in alcohol than a standard cocktail. In Portugal, it’s a year-round favorite and is considered the ideal pre-dinner beverage. (White Port is available at Bevmo stores.)

INGREDIENTS:
  • 4 ounces tonic water, such as Fevertree or Q Tonic
  • 2 ounces white port
  • Orange slice, or orange peel as garnish
  • A sprig of rosemary as an optional garnish
INSTRUCTIONS:
  • Fill a glass with ice – a highball is often recommended, but a wine glass looks beautiful. Pour in the port – if using a larger glass, go with 3 oz port and 5 oz tonic.
  • Give the orange slice a little squeeze before adding it to the glass.
  • Top with the tonic and stir lightly.
  • Add a sprig of rosemary if you have some handy (it’s not necessary though). Sip and enjoy!
