The Hall of Fame center fielder was one of the greatest players in the history of baseball.
San Francisco Giants and Major League Baseball legend Willie Mays died on Tuesday afternoon at the age of 93, according to a statement from his son released by the Giants.
“My father has passed away peacefully and among loved ones,” Michael Mays said. “I want to thank you all from the bottom of my broken heart for the unwavering love you have shown him over the years. You have been his life’s blood.”
The Hall of Fame center fielder hit the sixth-most home runs in MLB history with 660 and won 12 Golden Glove awards, according to the Giants.
Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said the entire baseball community was mourning the loss.
“All of Major League Baseball is in mourning today,” Manfred said in a statement. “Willie Mays took his all-around brilliance from the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro American League to the historic Giants franchise. From coast to coast in New York and San Francisco, Willie inspired generations of players and fans as the game grew and truly earned its place as our National Pastime,” he said.
