Better take the bus: Six weekends of track repairs to disrupt BART service in Oakland

BART this weekend will begin a series of projects to replace these and other interlocking tracks between the Rockridge and 19th Street stations that will disrupt service on most lines. The project will extend over the remainder of the year on six non-consecutive weekends. (Google image)

BART riders may be seeing red, but they won’t be riding on the Red Line — or other colors, for that matter — through much of Oakland this weekend.

Free buses are replacing BART trains between Rockridge, MacArthur, and 19th Street stations this Saturday and Sunday and five more non-consecutive weekends this year, the transit agency said in a news release.

This weekend, BART crews will begin replacing a series of interlockings between Rockridge, MacArthur, and 19th Street stations. Interlockings are a vital part of the BART system. They are segments of the railway that allow trains to safely move from track to track.

To ensure a safe workspace for the project team, free buses will replace trains between the three stations, BART officials said. Riders can expect delays of up to 40 minutes in the area where the work is happening on closure weekends.

In addition to this weekend, this work will take place July 20-21, Aug. 17-18, Sept. 21-22, Oct. 19-20, and Nov. 2-3. In addition to the track shutdown, there will be no Red Line service on these weekends.

Riders are advised to check the BART trip planner for current live schedules. More information about the project can be found on the BART website.
