New flagpole to honor Justice Carl Anderson

Longtime Piedmont resident and dedicated volunteer, Presiding Justice Carl Anderson passed away last year

Spearheaded by The Piedmont Beautification Foundation, a new flagpole and American flag will be installed soon to honor the late Presiding Justice Carl Anderson. PBF has teamed up with the Piedmont Scout Council and Piedmont Community Church to recognize the legacy of one of Piedmont’s greatest volunteers, who passed away last year.

Even while carrying on a distinguished career, first with the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, then as a Superior Court Judge, a Justice of the California Court of Appeal, and finally as its Presiding Justice, Carl found time to be one of Piedmont’s most important volunteers.

Carl’s service on the Piedmont Scout Council was highlighted by his Herculean efforts in concert with Stephen Bechtel Jr. to preserve the Piedmont Council from absorption into a huge Bay Area-wide council. Thanks to Carl’s efforts, the Piedmont Council survives and is the smallest Council in the Scouting movement.

Throughout his life here, Carl was a member of Piedmont Community Church, where he served on many committees, including the Board of Trustees.  In his later years Carl became an Advisor to PBF, offering his wisdom and opening his home for meetings.

Opening his home for charitable events was a hallmark of Carl’s approach to giving.  Perhaps the highlight in this regard was the unforgettable blessing bestowed upon the Piedmont Education Foundation.  He and his wife Margo (who predeceased him) welcomed the PEF to operate from the entire bottom floor of their home for four years.

The new flagpole will be located on the Highland Way frontage of the Church, near the Scout Office. The Scouts will be responsible for management of the American Flag—the location will afford easy access for Scouts working on the American Flag Merit Badge.

Members of the community who have not yet had an opportunity to honor Carl’s memory are invited to send a contribution to Piedmont Beautification Foundation, Piedmont City Hall, 120 Vista Ave., Piedmont 94611.

Gifts may also be made via PBF’s website HERE  Gifts should be earmarked for the Flagpole Project. Carl’s family will be notified of all gifts made in his honor.
