What began as a joyful graduation celebration at Skyline High School in Oakland ended in gunfire and chaos that sent at least two people to the hospital Thursday evening, Oakland police said.

Authorities were called about 7:45 p.m. to the school in the Oakland hills after multiple gunshots were heard, and found a man and a woman who had been hit by gunfire. They were taken to a hospital in stable condition, officials said.

Another person was also reportedly hit by gunfire and showed up at a hospital by their own means, but police did not respond to a request for information about a third injury in the shooting.

Police said they safely cleared the campus, and two people were detained.

Some witnesses described hearing what they thought were fireworks until they realized it was actually gunfire. A video circulating on social media appears to show a group of young people getting into a fight outside of the football field where graduation events were taking place, followed by the sound of gunshots.

Investigators were still piecing together what happened, although it appeared to be an isolated incident, Oakland police Lt. Robert Trevino said.

After the shooting, police were able to safely disperse the crowds gathered for graduation events, Trevino said.
