For folks who dig the idea of creating quick and dirty sculpture, the City of Alameda’s 56th Annual Sand Castle and Sand Sculpture Contest on Saturday should be just the thing.
A six-foot beer stein next to an equally huge pretzel, a giant snail with the title, “Snailed It,” a giant ice cream sundae — these are just a few examples of past entries in the event, held at Robert Crown Memorial State Beach at Otis and Westline drives starting at 9 a.m.
It’s free to enter the family-friendly contest, and those with creative flair and manual dexterity may even walk away with an award (not to mention a ton of sand in their shoes).
The event begins with registration at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, and the work must be completed by noon or the arrival of the first judge. The categories: 12 and under, 13 and over, and Family.
Judging criteria includes up to 30 points for originality of design, another 30 for originality in details, and up to 20 points each for neatness and technique.
Entries can incorporate shells, rocks or wood found on the beach the day of the event. The event sponsor, the Alameda Recreation and Park Department, strictly warns that no glass or live animals may be used.
