The theme of this year’s event, selected by the Park Commission, is “Wildlife in the Parks.” The event will feature:
- Raptor meet & greet: Get up close and personal with a live hawk or owl, courtesy of the Lindsay Wildlife Center (see examples of their raptors above).
- Public Works big trucks: See the equipment Public Works staff uses daily in their work to keep Piedmont’s trees and public spaces healthy and beautiful. Children will be able to climb up and sit in the cab of the trucks.
- Wildlife themed arts & crafts: Make an owl from a pinecone! Parks Commissioners will be on hand to assist little ones with their creations.
- Raffle: Enter to win a Lego set or children’s book related to Arbor and Earth Day themes.
Adults in attendance will have plenty to learn as well, with informational tables from the Piedmont Garden Club and the City’s Sustainability Division.
Heritage Trees to be announced at event
The Arbor Day celebration will also feature the announcement of the 2024 class of Piedmont Heritage Trees. Nominators of selected trees will be recognized at the event and receive a Piedmont Heritage Tree lapel pin.
The Heritage Tree program, now in its seventh year, aims to raise awareness of and appreciation for Piedmont’s diverse urban forest. Heritage Trees are nominated by community members and selected by the Park Commission.
