Running through the balloon arch is a rite of passage for young ball players.

The annual Piedmont Baseball Softball Foundation’s Opening Day celebration took place on Sunday, March 10 at 8:30 a.m. at Becker Playfield. Losing an hour of sleep due to Daylight Saving Time did not appear to dampen the enthusiasm of the hundreds of young players and their families who showed up at the early hour. Hot chocolate and coffee provided by event sponsor Stacey Isaacs took some of the sting out of the morning call time — players were also treated to donuts and music by Deejay “Pee Dot” Scott. Teams at all levels of youth baseball and softball took turns running through a purple and white ballon arch, marking the official season kick-off.
