Oakland Animal Services launches dog adopt-a-thon with midnight madness hours

Facing unremitting overcrowding, Oakland Animal Services is offering free adoptions and extended hours this week.

This dog adopt-a-thon is being held in response to an unprecedented influx of dogs over 25 lbs. With a limited number of kennels and the continued arrival of new dogs, Oakland Animal Services is pulling out all the stops to save these larger dogs’ lives.

“So far, we have largely been able to avoid euthanasia,” says Oakland Animal Services Director Ann Dunn, “through heroic efforts from our foster and adoption teams, the tireless work of incredible volunteers, and because this community has stepped up to adopt following urgent calls for help. As our intake continues to increase, it is getting harder and harder to move dogs through the shelter quickly enough to avoid euthanizing for space. As the challenge for saving our dogs continues to grow, our resolve grows with it. We are absolutely determined to help as many dogs as we possibly can and need your help.”
