Piedmont girls soccer romps to playoff opener win

The Piedmont High School girls soccer team ran away with a 6-0 win at Witter Field over visiting Albany on Feb. 13 in the opening round of the North Coast Section Division 3 playoffs.

The Highlanders advanced to face No. 2 seed Cardinal Newman on the road in Santa Rosa on Feb. 16.

The game was scoreless early on before Miranda Liu finally broke through in the 25th minute. Liu got through on a breakaway, and sped through the defense all evening.

Elsa Wallway scored on a penalty kick in the 38th minute to make it 2-0.

Liu scored again in the 41st minute, putting a left-footed shot from 20 yards in off the far post.

Louisa Symkowick converted off a corner kick in the 55th minute.

Elia Kwong scored in the 81st minute to make it 5-0. And Eliza Hammond completed the scoring on a long shot that went over the Albany goalkkeeper’s head and into the net.

Cardinal Newman defeated Pinole Valley in the opening round, 5-0. The Cardinals are unbeaten on the year at 9-0-4. Piedmont is now 12-3-2.
