Piedmont girls basketball tunes up for playoffs

The Piedmont High School girls basketball team closed its regular season with a 62-34 victory at Castro Valley on Feb. 9. Natalia Martinez scored a whopping 40 points to lead the Highlanders.

The Trojans played well early, taking a 12-11 lead after the first quarter. But Piedmont soon took control, outscoring Castro Valley 20-7 in the second period. Martinez scored 16 of her points in the quarter.

It was more of the same in the third quarter as Martinez scored 13 and the Highlanders extended the lead to 47-30.

Shakila Zuberi had nine points and Kat Melian and Lindsey Wirgler each scored six.

On Feb. 7, Piedmont defeated San Leandro at home, 74-24. Scoring was not available from the game.

The Highlanders finished the regular season 19-5 on the court, plus a forfeit win over Mt. Eden. Counting that, Piedmont was 9-1 in West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division play, good enough for a co-championship with Bishop O’Dowd. The teams split their two meetings. Both were selected for berths in the North Coast Section Open Division playoffs.

Piedmont received the sixth seed and will host third-seeded Carondelet on Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. The winner will face No. 2 Cardinal Newman on the road on Feb. 21.
