The Piedmont High School girls basketball team defeated Oakland and Alameda to raise its record to 18-5 on the season. The two-game winning streak came after losing to Bishop O’Dowd.
On Feb. 2, the Highlanders beat visiting Alameda, 54-48. Lindsey Wirgler had 23 points while Natalia Martinez had 11 and Shakila Zuberi had 10. The game was tight throughout, with the always-tough Hornets leading 17-13 after one quarter and 28-26 at halftime.
Piedmont inched ahead 36-34 after three and held on at the end, despite losing Zuberi to fouls late. Juliana Johnson led Alameda with 22 points including eight in the fourth quarter. Atiana Aumua had 11 points for the Hornets.
On Feb. 5, the Highlanders defeated Oakland 75-45 in a nonleague game at Oakland. Martinez had 41 points while Samantha Smith had 17 and Wirgler 11.
Piedmont led 17-16 after one quarter before taking a 31-23 lead at halftime. The Highlanders blew it open in the third quarter, outscoring the Wildcats, 27-5.
Daijha Teague and Tyliana Velasquez each scored 12 to lead Oakland. Ojiugo Egeonu added 10.
Piedmont had beaten Bishop O’Dowd in the teams first meeting, 59-50. But on Jan. 31, the host Dragons avenged the loss, winning 69-50. No individual statistics were available. The teams are now tied atop the West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division at 5-1.
The Highlanders next host San Leandro on Feb. 7 before closing the season at Castro Valley on Feb. 9.
