Piedmont’s annual MLK Day celebration drew hundreds to the Alan Harvey Theater on Monday. This year’s theme — “Remain Awake” — featured speakers including Corrina Gould of the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust; Piedmont Mayor Jen Cavenaugh; and keynote speaker Dr. Amber Johnson, Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff in the Division for Equity and Inclusion at UC Berkeley.
The theme was inspired by a speech entitled “Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution” that King delivered at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC on March 31, 1968, four days before he was assassinated.
The event was sponsored by the Piedmont Anti-Racism and Diversity Committee with the City of Piedmont.
