Piedmont girls basketball takes two at own tourney

Piedmont High School’s girls basketball team continued with its strong start to the season, beating Berwick Academy and Vanden at its own Paris Twins Classic.

The Highlanders played just two games as the tournament attracted six teams rather than the standard eight.

Piedmont is now 5-0 on the season and will next host Berkeley on Dec. 13.

The Vanden game was the better of the two as the Highlanders needed to go to double-overtime to pull out a 71-68 victory. Natalia Martinez had 41 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Samantha Smith had 15 points and seven rebounds. Thirteen of her points came in the fourth quarter and overtime. Lindsey Wirgler had 10 points. Kat Melian had 16 rebounds and Shakila Zuberi pulled down seven.

The game was tied at halftime, 19-19. Vanden pulled ahead through three quarters, 41-35 and the teams went to overtime at 54-54. The first overtime ended 60-60.

Berwick Academy is a team from Australia and the Highlanders won, 62-32. Martinez had 25 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Wirgler had 21 points and eight rebounds and Zuberi scored 11 with six rebounds. Piedmont got out to a 22-4 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.
