Police arrested two suspects in a residential burglary that happened sometime on the weekend of Nov. 11-13 on Greenbank Avenue. The victim called in the report at 7 a.m. on November 13 and said reported several large items including an oven and a toilet had been taken.
Piedmont Police officers used data from the city’s Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) system to locate a Ford pickup that was apparently involved in the burglary, according to Piedmont Police Captain Chris Monahan. The truck was located in Oakland. Police found the truck at the address it was registered to and also found the stolen property, according to Captain Monahan. While at the address, two suspects returned to the location and were taken into custody.
Captain Monahan said “several” replica handguns were found in the truck and that one of the individuals had a warrant out and also had suspected methamphetamine on his person. Some property was identified and returned to the owner.
On Nov. 10, an alleged burglary took place on Oakland Avenue. A suspect entered the house between 3:08-3:17 p.m. The resident was upstairs sleeping at the time of entry. The suspect entered through an unlocked window in the kitchen and took jewelry out of the master bedroom. The suspect then took a blue 2016 Ford F-150 and fled the scene, according to Captain Monahan.
A second suspect vehicle was later identified — a white Honda Civic that had license plates reported stolen out of San Francisco.
On Nov. 11, police found a man on foot on Grand Avenue who had a warrant out for a crime committed in Piedmont. At 7 a.m., Justin Hausler was identified by Piedmont police. He was asked if he was Hausler and he said no, according to Captain Monahan, who added that the suspect was told to stop and attempted to flee. After a brief pursuit, he was detained and admitted his identity. The warrant was confirmed as well as one out of Oakland. He was taken to Santa Rita and booked for willfully resisting and delaying a peace officer in the discharge of their duty.
His warrant in Piedmont was for vandalism and the warrant out of Oakland was for violating a court order, according to Captain Monahan.
On Nov. 11, a man was arrested for DUI on Sunnyside Avenue. The report came in at 11:48 p.m. When police arrived, they found a male driver in a Volkswagon Jetta that had just collided with two parked cars. According to Captain Monahan, the officers found cans of alcoholic beverages outside the crashed car. The driver blew a 0.108 on a preliminary alcohol test. Police also smelled marijuana in the vehicle, according to Captain Monahan.
Two passengers were also on scene and all three were from the Monterey area, according to Captain Monahan, and did not know the area. The passengers had no injuries and were released. The driver was arrested for DUI and taken to Santa Rita Jail. Blood was taken there. The vehicle was towed.
On Nov. 15, the city’s ALPR system identified a stolen black Kia Sedona entering the city. Police found the vehicle on Somerset Road. The suspects attempted to flee and the driver hit two patrol cars, getting lodged on the roadway, according to Captain Monahan. Officers then took two suspects (one male, one female) into custody.
A search of the vehicle turned up burglary tools, narcotics and stolen credit cards, Captain Monahan said. The two were taken to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. The male driver was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, resisting police and evading, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools and possession of narcotics. The passenger was charged with failure to follow a court order and possession of narcotics.
On Nov. 15, the ALPR system reported a hit on a stolen black 2016 Hyundai Electra at 6:12 p.m. The vehicle was found parked on Estates Drive with its high-beams on. As police made a U-turn to get behind the vehicle, the latter fled the scene, according to Captain Monahan. The vehicle stopped on Somerset and officers exited their patrol car to approach the vehicle. The driver then hit the patrol car and then fled, according to Captain Monahan.
The suspect and the vehicle are still outstanding.
On Nov. 16, a U-Haul truck was found at the 76 gas station at MacArthur Boulevard and Oakland Avenue at 2:06 a.m. The license plate matched a recently recovered U-Haul but the vehicle’s VIN did not match that vehicle. A while male adult was found in the driver’s seat along with a glass pipe, according to Captain Monahan. The suspect, Edward Moore, was on probation, Captain Monahan said.
Police contacted U-Haul and found the vehicle was due back on Oct. 23 and that Moore was not the renter and did not have permission to have the vehicle, according to Captain Monahan. Moore was taken to Santa Rita Jail for possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of paraphernalia.
On Nov. 16, at least 11 vehicles were vandalized in the area of Scenic Avenue. The cars all had their windows smashed but apparently nothing was taken from the vehicles, according to Captain Monahan. Surveillance video identified a suspect vehicle, a 2022 Honda HRV. The investigation is ongoing.
