Piedmont boys water polo defeats Newark Memorial in NCS

The Piedmont High School boys water polo team defeated Newark Memorial 12-9 on Nov. 4 in the second round of the North Coast Section Division 2 playoffs.

The Highlanders advance to face top-seeded Marin Academy on Nov. 8 at Marin Academy. Game time is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.

George Stein led Piedmont (15-8) with five goals. He also recorded a steal. Peter Krumins, Daniel Banin, and Declan Linnane each scored twice, with Leo Hurwitz scoring the other goal. Banin, Linnane, and Elles Krieckhaus had assists. Banin also had two steals.

Gus Von Metszch and Luke McAuliffe each had four saves.

Piedmont scored first against Newark Memorial, but the game was tight throughout the first half, with the Highlanders taking a 6-5 lead into the break. Adrian Rosales scored a goal with three minutes, 52 seconds left in the third quarter to tie the score at 7-7 for the Cougars.

Hurwitz then scored the go-ahead goal and Stein followed to make it 9-7 and Piedmont held the lead the rest of the way.
