Piedmont tennis sweeps nonleague matches

Piedmont High School’s girls tennis team won a pair of nonleague matches, defeating St. Mary’s and Head-Royce.

The Highlanders beat St. Mary’s at home on Sept. 14, 7-0. Kate Jumper beat Makenna Lai in the No. 1 singles match, 6-1, 6-1. Carolina Romanczuk defeated Helen Pollak at No. 2, 6-3, 6-0. Arianna Kortum downed Paula Devine at No. 3, 6-1, 6-4. And Ellie Broscow handled Amaya Bells at No. 4, 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles, the Piedmont team of Samantha Huynh and Maddie Tran beat Claire Abboud and Eva Rolm at No. 1, 6-1, 6-1. Sophie LaForte and Inara Mehta defeated Maddie Nadel and Mia Christenbaum at No. 2, 6-0, 6-2. And at No. 3, Abigail Call and Alina Shahid beat Hanna Zewdu and Kiki Bustingham, 6-0, 6-0.

On Sept. 15, the Highlanders defeated host Head-Royce, 5-2. Tanya Kononova had a tough time in the No 1 singles match, losing a tight one to Noelle Chen, 7-5, 7-6 (5).

Romanczuk defeated Mia Huang at No. 3, 6-1, 6-4. Kortum downed Isabella Wang at No. 4, 6-4, 6-1. At No. 2, Head-Royce’s Isa Salgado Manso beat Kate Jumper, 6-4, 6-2.

Piedmont swept the doubles. Cecilia DeFazio and Emma Eisemon defeated Ainsley High and Natalia Martell at No. 1, 7-5, 6-4. Tran and Huynh beat Juno Yu and Saira Bashambu at No. 2, 6-4, 6-3. Broscow and Mehta downed Sabrine Sarandah and Kali Oishi-Patel, 6-1, 4-6, 10-8.
