The Piedmont High School boys water polo team took fourth place in a tournament in Napa on Sept. 22-23. The Highlanders won three matches to improve to 7-2 on the season.
“Team is playing well,” Piedmont coach John Savage said. He said his squad is looking forward to big West Alameda County Conference matchups with Berkeley on Sept. 26 and Newark Memorial on Sept. 27.
The Highlanders defeated Whitney-Rocklin 13-9 on the first day of the tournament. Piedmont scored the first four goals of the game and never looked back. Declane Linane led the way for the Highlanders with three goals. Elles Krieckhaus, George Stein, and Quincy Sherman each had two goals. Gus Van Metszch, Peter Krumins, Finn Burke, and Daniel Banin each had a goal as well.
Jaden Arnold and Jackson Begley each had three goals for Whitney.
Piedmont beat Stevenson-Pebble Beach, 9-8. Burke scored with two minutes, seven seconds remaining in regulation to break an 8-8 tie. It was his second goal of the game.
Linnane had three to lead the Highlanders. Stein also had two while Banin and Leo Hurwitz had one goal apiece.
Cash Satava, Jack Weber, and Laird Welch each scored twice for Stevenson.
Piedmont lost to Monte Vista on Sept. 23, 9-4. The Mustangs jumped out to leads of 4-0 and 9-1 before the Highlanders made it respectable late. Piedmont got single goals from Burke, Linnane, Stein, and Charlie Wright. Caden Poulleau had three goals for Monte Vista as did Jack LeMoine.
Finally, Piedmont beat Foothill-Pleasanton, 7-4. The Highlanders scored the first two goals of the match and led all the way. Evan Dickason had three goals to lead Piedmont. Spencer Barlow had two and Krumins and Burke had single goals. Satvick Marivada had two goals for Foothill.
On Sept. 19, Piedmont defeated San Leandro 16-3 in WACC play. Burke had six goals to lead the Highlanders. Banin had three and Yotiv Kariv, Sherman, and Hurwitz each had two.
