Girls’ water polo: Piedmont beats San Leandro

The Piedmont High School girls water polo team defeated San Leandro on Sept. 19, 21-8. That came after a tough loss to Lick-Wilmerding, 15-14 on Sept. 14.

The Highlanders are now 1-4 on the season.

Kat Melian and Abigail Jacoby each scored four goals in the win over San Leandro. Esme Krumins and Anne Reardon had three while Sage Gilbert and Olivia Kaltner had two apiece.

Julia Montes, Sydney Olson, and Vivian Burke each scored a goal to round out the scoring for Piedmont.

The Highlanders scored the first three goals of the game. Jacoby got things started and Melian followed with two goals. The match was still close at the end of the first quarter, with Piedmont holding a 6-4 lead. However, the Highlanders blew it open with the next four goals and 11 of the next 14.

Natalia Olivares had six goals for the Pirates.

The match against Lick-Wilmerding was extremely close, with the teams tied 12-12 at the end of regulation. Piedmont was able to get leads of 13-12 and 14-13 on goals by Jacoby. But the Tigers got consecutive goals from Ella Reddy and Ivy Kilar to win the game.

Melian scored nine goals in the game to lead the Highlanders. Jacoby had three with Krumins and Sydney Olson scoring the others.

Kilar had four goals to lead the Tigers.
